As far as I know, qmail, postfix, sendmail all pre-date courier. They are all mail
"widgets". Sam wrote courier, drawing on the "best-of" all its ancestors, to be a
complete mail "system". I chose courier because it's all I needed; alternately, I
would
have had to marry 3 or 4 different widgets to get what I wanted.
I could also have used Netscape Messaging Server, but it's huge, slow, and expen$ive.
In short, Courier is a complete solution, and is relatively new.
