If this is a true transaction of what you sent via telnet, then you need to read the RFC again. http://rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2060.txt -- And it's really a good idea anyway when you get *any* protocol error (like the above) by manually typing a command.
LOGIN requires 2 arguments. :)
