The problem with your example is that it is totally indescriminate in its actions. It will reply to postmaster mail; it will reply to mailing lists (BIG sin!), and it will reply to other auto-reply systems, creating mail loops.
There's a reason that auto-response systems (such as the classic "vacation" program, and the "holiday" program that I wrote more recently) are developed for this specific purpose. If you read one of them, you'll probably find yourself enlightened.
