this is my first time installing the Courier package. O/S is Red Hat 7.3, fully patched. Courier is 0.42.2. I have followed the INSTALL instructions from top to bottom (I think).
If you actually followed the instructions, you would've ended up with binary RPMs that you would simply install, and they would take care of all the authentication configuration for you.

Your most likely problem is that you need to configure PAM. Either do that, or build the RPMs.
