I tired using mozilla mail and does the same thing. I am watching netstat,
and there is one connection when I check my mail. But if I go to another
folder, it prompts me for a password and opens another connection. Enter
the password, it doesn't work. Any more ideas?

In /etc/courier-imap/imapd (on Gentoo, anyway.. yours might be different)

# Maximum number of connections to accept from the same IP address

MAXPERIP=50

That solved the exact same problem for me. My MUA was opening multiple connections and subsequent connections were failing. I have Mozilla set to check all IMAP folders over the LAN anyway, and I don't have more than 50 folders.

It's been working great. HOpe this helps! :)
