Upgrading to the current version of Courier gives me errors about missing
fam. This has been discussed here already.

rpm? fam is optional, even when it's compiled in. If you don't want to actively use fam, then don't enable IMAP_ENHANCEDIDLE in your imapd configuration. Courier will still require libfam to be installed, but will not require that you run any additional software.

as probably many of the Courier (and qmail) users, I use tcpserver instead
of inetd for performance and security reasons. Because httpd and ftpd run as
standalone, I have switched off inetd completely.

As fam needs portmap, and portmap isn't available because inetd isn't
running things, are a little bit more complicated.

According to the following page, fam can run as a standalone service: http://smarden.org/runit/runscripts.html#fam

So there you go. Portmap and fam both run as a standalone service. No tcpserver of inetd needed.
