Yep, that was it... so so simple I couldn't see it. I thought it
was $HOME/.mailfilter (missing or not) that was the key factor.

Thank you for putting me out of my self-induced misery, and the tip 
about 'to ./Maildir' not being needed. I will put together a howto 
for this nice courier+bogofilter setup and publish it somewhere.
