I got my own Courier working just today (Wheee! ;) ): it's not a matter of your authentication modules, but you have to prefix every command with an (freely selectable (?)) alphanumeric string, eg.:
A1234 LOGIN "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" "mypassword" A1234 OK Password accepted
B0003 NOOP B0003 OK
...etc...
...then it'll work :)
You may have a glance at the IMAP-RFC (found at http://www.imap.org/about/ for instance), where this & much more of the protocol is described.
