We may have a small problem.
I do use localstatedir, but the pid files still get created in /var/run. Here is my configure line for courier
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc/courier --with-piddir=/var/run/c ourier \
As I said: do not use --with-piddir. It's an internal option.
Use --localstatedir.
