The systems details again:
It's a Sparc machine, running Solaris 9.
I'm using Courier 0.45.2
I'm using Ldap Authentication only.

Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong, or at least where I can look?

What's going wrong is that the server process is running under the wrong userid and groupid, so it doesn't have the permissions to do anything to the maildir. Check the LDAP configuration and verify that the account's userid and groupid matches the owner of the maildir and all of its subdirectories.
