Thanks again Sam, that was it, although it took some rather bent debugging. I eventually set a Maildir to 777 and tried to deliver into it. The delivery worked, but the resulting messages had some very strange values for groupid and userid. It turns out that I had entered the groupUid and userUid properties transposed in the ldapauthrc, so it was trying to create files with these values swapped, and, obviously, failing. Everything seems to be working now.
