It is the function of any network-related software introduced to an existing
environment to be as compatible as possible with the existing installed
software.

Standards sometimes facilitate this (obviously TCP/IP is a good example) and
sometimes hinder it considerably (the original unimplementable SMB spec
leaps to mind).

I like software that adheres to open standards, but if I have a thousand
Outlook clients which need to move to IMAP, I will be far more interested in
how well the IMAP server I'm looking at conforms to Outlook's idea of an
IMAP server than how well it adheres to the RFCs.

There's nothing political about it: you can only have so much change in a
given time and it's always easier to change the server than to change the
client.
