I suggest you have a look at squirrelmail and horde/imp. Horde is an entire 
productivity suite but the webmail part can also be used standalone. I find 
it very complete and userfriendly.
squirrelmail is smaller and completely php, so instead of porting sqwebmail to 
php, just use that.
