I had a discussion with the Exim maintainer and the reason is slightly different. It has to do with who closes the connection so resource usage is more optimal. Don't completely remember the details though.

Ah, but it is annoying. I made a patch to suppress the message but never got around to really test it. Maybe I will if there is interest.
