For my patch I'm not planning to use libspf[1], but libspf2[2], which is a complete rewrite done by different authors, and which is of higher quality.

Did you actually manage to install libspf2? From the looks of it, although libspf2 appears to be in a better shape, it also has a long way to go. A brief investigation reveals that:
1) as shipped in 1.0.3, aclocal.m4 is broken and must be generated. You should've had a slew of libtool errors when building libspf2.
2) It does not build on Fedora Core 2, x86_64, due to linking issues with the glibc resolver.
