Hi!
I am using Courier 0.46 (Debian sid) using OpenLDAP 2.1.30 as authentication backend.
I notice that whenever the system load gets higher than (I beleve) 4.0 Courier's authentication stops working. I cannot log in to the mailboxes using either POP3 or IMAP nor does Courier accept mail using SMTP ("Service currently not available").
I know that 4.0 is a high value for the system load, but especially in this case I'd like to send myself an email message, notifying me about the hight load.
Maybe there is some protection within the system, that disables authentication if the load gets to high. What I'd like to know: Is this a courier feature or is this something I have to search in my LDAP server? Would it change if I change the authentication backend to something else?
Courier waits 30 seconds for the authentication request to come back. Even with a load average of 4 that should be enough, unless you're heavily swapping.
I'd say that your swap is thrashing. Add more RAM to the box.
