Hmm, okay, thanks for enlightening me. I should have read the RFC.

That's true. However, perhaps this raises a philosophical question of
the function and obligation of an MTA.

Arguably, an outbound SMTP service is acting as an agent for its user and
thus if the user uses Bcc to send a message, the SMTP should do its
utmost to ensure the implied privacy; that is, to use multiple sessions
if required to deliver to the remote host.

Conversely, an inbound SMTP service is also acting as an agent for its
recipients, and it can be assumed that the users will want to know as
much as possible about the messages they are receiving. Thus, if the
SMTP receives something a multi-party RCPT TO, I argue that it should do
its utmost to convey that information to the recipient(s).

In other words, if you are trying to BCC something to both me and my
enemy, it is incumbent upon your outbound service to keep them separate
and private. If both my enemy and I happened to live on the same host,
our inbound SMTP would be providing a disservice to us both by throwing
away the extra information it has about the envelope recipients.

Therefore, I propose that it would be acceptable, and even desirable, for
Courier to log all RCPT TO addresses in an X-Original-Bcc (or Received or
whatever) header.

Which I gather is how Courier works...?
