I quite know about that :P I've implemented some protocols myself during the last decade, but I haven't been able to debug this. For the sake of information completity, I've used both printf (with the correct \r and \n specials) piped through netcat, by-hand netcat and telnet, and hand-disabled tls config among sendmail. So far, no luck.
