Greg,

Some packages off the internet are built with GNU ld in mind. Last I checked there are a few minor differences in between the two ld's that, in the past, prompted me to install and use GNU ld. Of course, I haven't played with solaris ld since, oh, solaris 8 so maybe things are a bit different now. I was pleasantly surprised to see gcc included with Solaris 10 so I guess it's probably safer from here on out to NOT use gnu binutils. =)

Of course, that doesn't mean that I'm sane.. Just that I agree that with Solaris 10, GNU ld most likely does more harm than good...

3) LD is in /usr/local/bin because I downloaded binutils and compiled
them with the Solaris GCC in an attempt to have the latest version on

same error. It's located in dir /usr/sfw/sparc-sun-solaris2.10/bin on
a standard Solaris10 instalation.

4) I have compiled many other source packages from the Internet, including BerkeleyDB, binutils, expect, libtool, tcl, and tk. None of
them had a problem like what is showing up now..

Can you think of anything else I should check?

Yes, your sanity.

No one in their right mind uses the GNU "ld" on Solaris. There's
no need to, unless you're going to tell me that Sun no longer
ships "/usr/ccs/bin/ld" with Solaris 10.
