in my last mail i had questions on migrating one mailserver and existing mailfolders to a different physical host, which got a fast and precise reply, thanks again for that, bowie. now, if i already have a new server, i thought about bringing redundancy in my setup, so that, in a case of 'whatever'-failure, there is a second machine handling everything as usual. so basically i'd need round-robin-dns entries for the mailserver the clients connect to, with a low ttl so that i can have fast changes (30 minutes or so). i would have two mx-records with same priority each mentioning one of the two servers for each handled domain. but how would i handle mailfolders of users and authentication? authentication using a central database/ldap-server would certainly work, but i would need to open it to be accessible from the outside. firewall rules would be in order. mailfolders, having the same content at every time, seem a little more difficult. there's distributed filesystems, but doesn't the mailserver need locking, and isn't that slow? i've never done this before, so this is the biggest question mark in my thoughts :/ i'm not totally unexperienced with setups, networks and such, but i seem to have a natural inhibition when it comes to relying on things i have no experience with, which is why i ask you if my thoughts are any good :) i would most likely benefit from nudges in the right direction but don't mind getting answers with complete solutions either. thanks in advance, sebastian lechte -- Sebastian Lechte Filmstarts.de Technik
