There seem to be a few basic options. The only one I've done is
multiple filtering (spam/virus) frontend servers all delivering to the same
backend (IMAP/POP) server. The other options I know of are distributed
filesystems (preferably with RAID), and I'm pretty sure I've seen an IMAP
proxy that will redirect users to the backend server their stuff is stored on
(although this may not be what you want).
