I said: you must make sure that you have forward and reverse DNS working. Courier does not use /etc/hosts.

What is "identd"? I know all services on my machine and have never seen such :-)

Telnet on SMTP gives no welcome-message and seems to be dead after connect!

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ telnet 127.0.0.1 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.

This will be the last time I tell you: you must have valid forward and reverse DNS working. A dinky little hosts file will not do.
