Gamin has been around awhile and is stable (FYI, version numbers less than 1.0 in Open Source Software don't necessarily mean the product is unstable, maybe just feature incomplete like Courier. Gamin shipped with RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5 so RH considers it stable).

Note that if you're not using a client that specifically supports the IMAP IDLE command then FAM/Gamin is all for nothing. Thunderbird and Outlook are the two biggest clients that use IDLE, webmail packages like Squirrelmail do not.
