Is there any single place were the operational effect of various exit codes is summarized? The effect of exit codes for external programs run from a .courier file is well summarized in the dot-courier(5) man page, exit codes for maildrop in embedded mode are described in localmailfilter(7), but what about EXITCODE settings for maildrop in delivery mode? I can't find a reference to this anywhere.
What the exit codes of maildrop in delivery mode do depends entirely on what whoever invokes maildrop does. What Courier does, in response to various exit codes returned by a mail delivery agent, is summarized in dot-courier(5), as you've noted.
Maildrop is just an external program invoked from a .courier file, and is no different than any other external program invoked from a .courier file. When maildrop, or any other program, is designated as a default mail delivery destination, it's as if maildrop or external program gets invoked from a .courier file, for every recipient that does not have its own .courier file, and the response code is processed accordingly.
