I tried the following:

.         telnet localhost 110

.         +OK Hello there

.         User manager

.         +OK password required

.         Pass mailuser

.         -ERR chdir Maildir failed

 

What is the reason for the error message please?

My guess is that client systems send different credentials than what 

you do manually. You may enable DEBUG_LOGIN in authdaemonrc, or sniff
