The three acronyms (that I know in this context) are MTA => mail transport agent MDA => mail delivery agent MUA => mail user agent A MTA submits messages from one host to another. The MDA delivers a message to a specified recipient's mailbox. The MUA allows the user to read and write mail. So I think an IMAP/POP-server can not be classified with those keywords. Sure, you can say it's part of the access from the user to his mailbox, so you can call it MUA. But in practice, users will not agree, they have their MUA installed on their local system. I would consider the IMAP server as an additional layer between the MUA and the mailbox. The MDA only runs just when mail is put into the mailbox (e.g. maildrop), so it's not an MDA either. cu, Bernd
