I must be missing some trivial config switch, as everyone else seems to
be successful relaying through smtp.gmail.com using TLS and SASL. I'm
using courier 0.53 on Ubuntu installed via the courier-mta and
courier-ssl packages.

Any idea what I've missed here? For some reason courier doesn't seem to
be checking the esmtpauthclient file. Are there any switches I can
enable for more debug output? ESMTP_LOG_DIALOG=1 does not seem to have
any effect.

Here is the response I get from gmail:

Here are my configs:

esmtproutes:
: smtp.gmail.com,587

esmtpauthclient:
smtp.gmail.com [email protected] xxxxx

Update to the current version of Courier.

$ testmxlookup smtp.gmail.com
Domain smtp.gmail.com:
Relay: gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com, Priority: -1, Address: ::ffff:74.125.93.111
Relay: gmail-smtp-msa.l.google.com, Priority: -1, Address: ::ffff:74.125.93.109

The prehistoric version you're running requires the hostname listed under "Relay", from the output of testmxlookup, to be listed as the first field in esmtpauthclient. Which proved to be unwieldy, since it can change at any time. The current version uses the domain name, instead of the physical machine name, to key off.
