I have an account on my courier mailserver which is randomly giving this error for a particular user. The only thing I see weird is that they have a maildrop filter which previously triggered the same problem which has been re-introduced now with only occasional 556 errors: if ((/^From:.*airforcelover57\@aol\.com/)) { echo "550: Persistent SPAM Source, go away please" EXITCODE=77 exit } Could this cause an address to be temporarily unavailable??
Yes. Backscatter suppression does not work very well on systems that use mail filters to reject mail. Backscatter suppression, by definition, temporarily disables bouncing addresses.
