When subscribing to the shared folder, the directories are created
     correctly:

     ls /home/john/mail/Maildir/shared-folders/CertsAdmin/
       CertsReceived  CertsSended

However, the softlinks for each message are not, and the user only sees
     an empty shared folder.

Does anyone have any hint on what might be the problem?

   Permissions?

When logged in as john, can you ls the shared folder maildir.

Yes, the user is the owner of the directory. The user can subscribe to a shared folder, and the directory structure is created accordingly. It is just that the softlinks for messages are not created.

No – the /shared/ folder directory those messages are from. The target of the symlinks – can this user actually ls that directory.
