Hi Coworking Pioneers!

I’ve spent some time reading through most of the posts in this group
and just started contributing so I thought it was high time for an
introduction.

I’m Chris Kerins and I live in Costa Mesa, CA right on the border with
Newport Beach. I’ve had the idea for a creative coworking community
space for about 4 years now thinking it was my own odd one. Now
though, I’ve seen that the first seeds of coworking are independently
sprouting around the country and world. I’ve got a ton of ideas and
questions, but I’ll try to restrict this post to an introduction and
follow up with specific ideas in other posts. Feel free to ask any
questions here that we can move.

I’ve been working on my own as a designer in many different fields for
almost 20 years. Before finishing my B. Architecture from Cal Poly
SLO, I worked in Puerto Vallarta designing a children’s clinic working
out of a local architect’s office with a partner. That spoiled me
forever. If it wasn’t for that experience I might be a good corporate
office worker.

Since then I’ve worked in architecture (Hey, Jerome), graphic design,
web design, illustration and set design. I received my MFA in set
design from UCLA in the mid 90’s. So I definitely come to coworking
from a design point of view. Currently I’m teaching and practicing
arch. illustration and design, and run a web design studio.

As a hobby, I am the editor of MyFirstMac.com, creating a community
for Mac vets to help newbies. I know this is a big Mac group, so drop
me a line if you want to participate.

My vision has been a hybrid of the design studio we art and design
students lived in at college, The Office in Santa Monica and a dash of
community space. In my fantasyland, the space runs the whole range of
community classroom/workshop/gallery to coworking café-style to rent a
desk to permanent small business anchors. I can elaborate if someone
is interested. I’d like to start one in the Newport/Corona del Mar/
Costa Mesa area. However, price per sq. ft. can be steep around here
compared to other regions. But I'm feeling recession prices might make
this a good time to start. Anyone in OC interested in discussing, drop
me a line.

Group Leaders, I'm also happy to give some feedback from someone
relatively new to this group on the the Group site and Wiki if there's
interest.

That's it for now. Thanks for reading through. I'll drop more specific
questions into the group soon.

Chris Kerins
