I have been an evangelist for telecommuting and videoconferencing since.....hmmmm, forever. I co-wrote the Telecommuting Plan for Lawrence Livermore National Lab in 1992 or 1991 (or thereabouts). It was never implemented, but, the concept of a Neighborhood Telecommute Center, that was a new concept at that time, always appealed to me. It failed miserably in the real world (at least out here in CA).
Later in life, I consulted for a large conference and designed the "Network Neighborhood" (and "Virtual Classroom) booth where videoconferencing technology was available for attendees to touch, break, see, use...etc. The Network Neighborhood had sofas, comfy chairs, round tables, coffee. A good place to meet and collaborate. It was a major hit....the busiest booth at that years show.... The Network Neighborhood, looking back at it, seems a lot like what coworking is today. And coworking is, to me, an updated Neighborhood Telecommute Center.....a perfect fit. I have the time (retired from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, but still a young boomer), the $$, the history, and most of all the desire to try to make this work.
