Communicate communicate communicate!
Confronting people sucks, but you can do a good job of softening it with
healthy dollops of passive aggressiveness.

If you're starting off and only have a few members, those members should
have something of an emotional stake in what you're doing. That is, they
want to see you succeed and bring in more members for them to befriend. To
that end, they should be motivated to help you present the space in the most
attractive way possible.

Ask him if he thinks he can contain his belongings in a better way so the
space looks better to new people coming in. Be polite but firm.

The more you communicate the more you'll be on the same page.
