Signs I've noticed for where coworking is "about to happen", and have seen it morph into great community spaces once someone steps up to help make the infrastructure possible:
- a group of people (often professionals, though it's not exclusive) are already congregating (things like Jelly, meetups, barcamps, industry happy hours) - the rate of congregation is steady or increasing, and the attendance is diverse and often changing - they're often actively looking for locations to congregate - they're socializing outside of work - the group is comprised of people active in other existing groups/communities as well - the members of the group are actively recruiting people to their free work/social events - there are clear leaders emerging from that group of people whom I could work with to help them catalyze the collective efforts into something more organized Rather than attempt to force these sorts of activities in order to fill a space, or develop "new communities" (which I am continually discovering is much harder to do than people are willing to realize), finding ways to exist "in between the gaps" and supporting an existing ecosystem that would benefit from a cohesive approach to gathering and a space to do it in. -Alex /ah indyhall.org coworking in philadelphia On Wed, Jul 14, 2010 at 5:30 PM, Mike Weiss <[email protected]> wrote: > What actions show this? > > On Jul 14, 4:02 pm, Alex Hillman <[email protected]> wrote: > > I don't know how this quote keeps coming back up but I've seen it used in > 3 > > other context in the last 2 weeks, despite its false > > origins<http://www.snopes.com/quotes/sutton.asp> > > . > > > > *"When the cops asked bank robber Willie Sutton why he robbed banks, he > > said, 'Because thats where they keep the money'". * > > > > So when you ask me where I'd open a "coworking location", my answer > is...I > > would do it where the people with the actually want it the most. > > > > Not where they SAY they want it...where they show they want it, with > their > > actions. > > > > -Alex > > > > /ah > > indyhall.org > > coworking in philadelphia > > > > On Wed, Jul 14, 2010 at 3:35 PM, Mike Pihlman <[email protected] > >wrote: > > > > > > > > > .....where would you open a coworking location if you had nothing to > hold > > > you back and enough money to do it? > > > > > Thanks, Mike > > > > > -- > > > Mike Pihlman > > > AltamontCowork > > > 95 W. 11th Street, Suite 205 > > > Tracy, CA 95376 > > > Phone: 209-757-8862 > > > Web: AltamontCowork.com > > > Twitter: @AltamontCowork > > > > > -- > > > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google > Groups > > > "Coworking" group. > > > To post to this group, send email to [email protected]. > > > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > > > [email protected]<coworking%[email protected]> > <coworking%2bunsubscr...@googlegroups .com> > > > . > > > For more options, visit this group at > > >http://groups.google.com/group/coworking?hl=en. > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "Coworking" group. > To post to this group, send email to [email protected]. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > [email protected]<coworking%[email protected]> > . > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/coworking?hl=en. > > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Coworking" group.
