"A real sense of presence" Well, in spite of how far technology has brought us, I'd argue that as humans - we crave the ACTUAL presence, not the sense of presence. There's nuances of being physically present that technology can't replicate just yet, and I'm not sure it ever will 100%.
Meetings are probably a bad example of presence, too. How often are people that are actually in the same room during a meeting really "present"? You aren't there by choice, most of the time, you're there because you have to be. Because everyone agreed on a time. And if it's a creative exercise, you've now "scheduled creativity" which is a decidedly poor practice as well. Even Apple's FaceTime and Skype video chat being really, really easy to use, and which I have a particular newfound appreciation for, is *not* a replacement for the physical presence of another person. We're not wired to look at people through a pinhole, we're wired to form tribes, hunt, gather, and survive - *together*. I think that the naturalness of "presence" has an important role in keeping society grounded, and while it's cool to explore and push the boundaries of what's possible - remember what we're here for. Coworking does this better in so many cases because it's based on real human behavior instead of this made up version that generations have dreamed up as "more efficient". -Alex /ah indyhall.org coworking in philadelphia On Thu, Jun 2, 2011 at 3:23 AM, micheldenis <[email protected]>wrote: > Has anyone investigated 3D immersive virtual spaces as a coworking > place alternative ?
