What an interesting idea! I'm one of the catalysts putting together the upcoming Albany, NY coworking space, and I have a library background. My last full-time day job was as a news librarian. People wouldn't seek out a freelance researcher or travel to the public library for some questions, but having someone to help onsite is an even better amenity than a fax machine. (But not better than a coffee machine, because what is?)
