Huge +1 for Slack. Overall, chat is a tall order though: you need to have at least enough people that it doesn't feel empty, but as it grows it can become noisy. slack works best right now because a lot of people already use it for their companies, so the app is already open.
Between the two online gathering places that Indy Hall has - Slack and our GroupBuzz email list - we see about 10-15% overall participation in the chat room compared to 40%+ participation on GroupBuzz.
