Both can definitely succeed. But they're quite different, and both have pros and cons!
In broad strokes, from what I've learned in the last several years: Urban coworking tend to benefit from density and infrastructure. People leave their homes out of a mix of necessity (too small to live and work in the same place) and lifestyle. But urban settings can be more expensive, and people can be more competitive by nature. Rural coworking spaces tend to benefit from lower costs and community-oriented social norms. People congregate and the pace of life encourages people to know more people in their communities. But it can be much harder to find/reach people who aren't actively seeking workspace, or give them a good enough reason to leave their spacious homes.
