I used to send mail directly from my local workstation
(mutt+fetchmail+procmail+sendmail) to gmail's servers; this worked as long
as I kept the local SSL certificates up to date. After a few years I got
tired of having to constantly notice that mail wasn't working because they
rotated their certs _again_ and going through the hassle of refreshing the
local certificate chain, and gave up and switched to gmail's browser
interface.
