However this all turns out, please make sure not to lose the $^O test
croak("icmp ping requires root privilege") if ($> and $^O ne 'VMS');
which is in the core 2.02 version delivered in 5.6.1; the 2.06 version
from CPAN has
croak("icmp ping requires root privilege") if $>;
