Its slightly subjective and contextual how you translate it, and there's
connotative and denotative ways of using it.

For instance, people sometimes use it in the light of "I am content with my
place in life", implying a positive-neutral state.  ( denotative )

Whereas it is often used as the pejorative, "the masses are content to go
bleatingly to their death", the implication that the state of mind of being
positive/neutral contentment is in itself, the result of ignorance and
delusion. ( connotative )
