Hello,
could you please help me understanding which is the correct way to
upgrade an existing CPS site to 3.4.0?
The site I'm trying to update was developed with CPS checked out from
trunk around December 20th, probably a version between 3.3.8 and
3.4.0.
This site uses some custom document types developed on the ZMI and a
customized portal theme. It already has workspaces (members
directories are inside it), sections and documents. The portlets types
used in the various sections and workspaces are mainly navigation,
document and text. It also uses some slightly modified versions of
original zpt or python scripts customized from the ZMI and residing
inside portal_skins/custom.

Every time a tried to upgrade I get some kind of error, some of them
have already been reported in the ticket system and before opening new
one I just wanted to be sure that the procedure I'm using for the
update is correct.
This is what I do:
1) Do a fresh checkout of CPS from trunk
2) Copy data.fs to the new instance
3) In the ZMI modify the last updated version form the site properties
(this is giving me problems since yesterday, I get an attribute error,
enable_password_reset)
4) Install the setup tool
5) Run the updates from portal_setup

We have made slight changes so that you don't have to change manually the last updated version in the portal properties to run old upgrade steps. Juste go to portal_setup, click "Show old upgrades", and select the ones you want. "Upgrade portal properties" is especially important to run.
