I'll be doing my 6th year as a TREC participant this year, in
case anyone has questions about it.  It's pretty fun - you get
to see how your system ideas really work in practice, head-to-head
with other systems.

This is the premier international forum for experimental information
retrieval research, where most of the action is.  We *do* get
participants from the NSA and FBI quite regularly, as well as Lexis,
Oracle and other companies.  Unfortunately, these folks are not as
forthcoming with their specific methods etc. as the academic people
are.

If you're keen on information retrieval, also consider ACM SIGIR, an
annual conference.  This year's is September 9-12 in the big easy:
