Wheres the crash?

Hello All

I am usually a world-class flamer, and you might expect I have been tempted
to bring out the old napalm sprayer recently. But lately for some reason
the negativity of it all seems to rebound and depress me. You are what you
eat, I guess. <g>

At this point I am again a bit confused about the focus of the list. So I
will post a few questions and wait to see if anyone cares to respond. Let me
try to be as gentle and as unbiased as I can be:

1. Is the discussion/deconstruction of Marxism heading anywhere? What has it
got to do with the crash? Can we attempt to link it to the purpose of the
list? I find it fascinating, but it IS getting very esoteric and hard to
follow for us non-marxists.

2. Weve seen a reference or two to a kind of dichotomy world view, i.e.
its either capitalism or socialism, there are no other choices. Is that
the sense of the list, or most of you? Is there any thought of synthesis
(I use this in a purely NON-dialectic way) of systems, or of exploring the
possibilities of something new or something else?

3. I seem to see implied in the discussions the idea that somehow
Marxism/Socialism will be waiting in the wings to take over when Global
Capitalism falls of its own weight. Is this the way we are supposed to view
the importance of the socialist discussion? Like a kind of Shadow
Government next in line to take the reigns and guide us away from the
abyss? (I am not trying to be cynical here, although the words tend to look
that way now that Ive typed them. Forgive my ineptness.) Can we start to
turn the discussion towards how capitalism will fall, what will be the role
of socialism, and what are the expected scenarios and outrcomes? (I am not
expecting consensus, -- or even whole complete thoughts just some linkage
toward the stated purpose of the list.)

4. Relative to my own stated neo-malthusian position, I believe it was Sam
who just used the term Malthusian Doomsayers, but others have also used
similar terms. I have objected a bit in the past to unthinking pejorative
labeling, since I think it is the result of not seriously examining the
issue. I sense that what is implied is that it is a settled issue that
Malthus was wrong and that there is no doom approaching. Others seem to
casually accept the idea that civilization under ANY system will
continue to muddle along. Did I miss something? Should I assume that is the
attitude of most of the list? My sense of it and the sense of many others is
that time is running out to fix the environmental problems, and this is what
I mean by doom. If indeed the neo-malthyusian/alarmist/Chicken Little
psotion is seen as irrelevent, I wish either to renew my efforts to support
my argument with a little more vigor. or return to lurk mode. (PS, Sam, I am
absolutely NOT in agreement with the Postel lady, and I suspect as you do
that oil money has tainted her research. Very clearly, free market
capitalism will NOT save us from the crash! .And thats not just MY humble
opinion.)

5. Id still like to see a discussion elaborating on all our differing
approaches to defining the crash, avoiding the crash, etc. Is this to be
hoped for? Is there some convergence of opinion to be hoped for?

So dear friends, I would like to request a re-focus toward linking our
discussions to the crash. I suspect the rash of unsub requests would
diminish if we did, also. Dont look on this as any attempt on my part to
stifle discussion. Please, continue, only once in a while can we talk about
the crash?

Thank you all,

Tom Warren
