Yes, this is a problem I kind of sense lurking even beneath Mark's
equation of Lenin's and Stalin's policies. There was more than
electrification to socialism, true. But there was no socialism
without electrification. This is a point of divergence between
Brucan, Mark (maybe others) and yours truly. Though I agree in that
the crazed industrialization generated by surplus value production
should be condemned for what it is, there is no way that a socialist
society exists but with a strong industrial backbone. Among other
reasons, because of the social and psychological consequences of an
industrial economy, which have to do with the definition of self that
each individual member of the formation can generate.
