Cognitive processes have a very slight effect upon
cellular and basic self preservation reflexes (Old
Granfathers aside). All
species possess them, and H Sapien's differences are in
degree, since they
are the product of evolution through many eariler species.
Hallyx was
arguing that you can't escape this, and to posit their
non-existence is an
error.

Self preservation reflexes are not the issue. The issue here
is one that is known in the philosophy of science as
emergence. The human language faculty, for example, is
emergent from evolutionary processes, sure, but, having
emerged, it is no longer reducible to them. The crucial
point about this is that human beings can manipulate symbols
both as communication and as reflection. This gives them a
certain control over their natural drives that other species
don't have. One might say that these drives are strongly
mediated through language. So rather than acting purely
instinctively we discuss what might be the best thing to do,
etc.

We
are all willing to listen to that elusive "someone" who can
resonably prove
that theorum, however.

All willing to listen to someone arguing for the necessity
for socialism? Not in my experience!!!

[Tom]It is probably not wise to accuse others of hackneyed
ideas after
alluding to Freud.

The issue was not Freud as such, but the fact that social
organisation requires a certain repression of natural
drives. The idea of an absolutely free society is a hopeless
one. Why? Because human beings will always self-regulate
through shared ideas, not being driven purely by instinct.
Try to imagine yourself acting purely by instinct. The
closest you could come to is to imagine a raving lunatic.

you DO perhaps need to read a little anthropology if you
can't
distinguish the "natural" difference between Hunter
Gatherers and
Capitalists. ... it has something to do with the original
"significant
differences" in evolution from the discussion above.

Now this is a nice one. Please explain the differences in
'nature' that make one person a hunter-gatherer and another
a capitalist. I always thought it had something to do with
history, but you suggest that some people are capitalists
rather than hunter-gatherers because of some genetic
predisposition. Weird!

hallyx, don't use "hoss" when posting. It doesn't translate
outside North
America, and leads to mistakenly correlating "hackamore"
with "hackneyed".

OK this is the really clever part of your message, I'll
grant you that one!

By the way, the inclination of Americans towards this
"anthropological" mode of thought that we have had
demonstrated in these messages is linked to pragmatist
philosophy, no? Now why would this brave new world have this
philosophic tendency I wonder?
