I eat my words regarding Theodore Giesel. I had no idea he had any life other
than the Dr.Seuss books that the public schools adopted with such enthusiasm,
and that I refused to let my sons read. It was a silly prejudice on my part,
and I will look him up and remedy my ignorance.
But I still think it is a great mistake to limit the furthering of a child's
vocabulary by restricting their access to 'big' literature. My mother was
reading Mary Shelley, and the like to us while we were still very young. It
was a bit of a disappointment to hit grammar school the first year and be
bored to tears by 'Dick and Jane'.
One of my favorite causes is the abandonment of the public school system in
the US, but its demise is well on the way by dint of its own internal
corruption and needs no further help from me...
Thank you for the correction.
Joan
