This is wonderful, and exactly what I was hoping this list would be about 
when I heard about it from Christine (yeah, it's all HER fault)...And for 
starters, I would like to suggest one of the books that I always recall when 
someone mentions total social collapse: Lucifer's Hammer, by Larry Niven and 
Jerry Pournelle. Besides being a really good read, it made me really think 
about what I would want to save should all social systems look to fall apart. 
It is a terrific apocalyptic tale, that makes the recent armageddon-style 
films look pretty tame.
Thank you for that last post; I was starting to get discouraged about things.
