Let's temporarily forget the dominant ethnoreligious group in Israel is
Jewish and the people they deported and confined to homelands are
Palestinians.
Which other state could get away with murder on such a scale and still enjoy
US diplomatic protection, funding, logistical and military support? Israel
is treated as a respectable democracy with a civilised leadership who have
to deal with an unfortunate problem with less civilised and unruly locals.
As socialists, environmentalists or anarchists we should not think what we
would do if we were Israeli Jews or Palestinians defending our own self
interests, but what we should do to stop our governments from supporting a
bloodbath. Let us be in no doubt without US support, Israel would not enjoy
the privileges it now has and would have been forced to reach a humble
agreement with Palestinians decades ago. Some Israelis think the CIA is
instigating violence to teach Israel a lesson. If they want a bloodbath
they're going the right way about it and Kosovo will seem little more than a
vicar's tea party. However, the actions of the Israeli Defence Force over
the years along with the abysmal record in neighbouring Lebanon should
suffice to enrage any proud people whose parents or grandparents were
forcefully deported.
We may have already crossed the point of no return, but if Jewish Israeli
wnat to live in peace, they'd better stop treating Palestinians like naughty
teenage prisoners, and start sharing their land, water and wealth. They have
the military strength to annihilate the Palestinian resistance, but if they
do, one wonders if we have ever learned the real lessons of history rather
than recycling officially snactioned hsitorical accounts to justify more
war.
In the light of recent experiences in Somalia, Iraq and Kosovo, I do not
think we can rely on UN forces to be impartial. Unless we address the
underlying economic disparities and socio-environmental issues, the UN could
soon just be an alternative occupier whose presence would extend way beyond
East Jerusalem. Sooner or later NWO cops would take over the whole region.
