    I doubt that any imperial power has actually
    outstripped the British Empire both is size
    and duration.

    And Lets not overlook todays European Union
    with its own government, law and now
    armed forces warily and perhaps greedily
    eyeing... NAFTA.

    It remains to be seen though which way
    Britain will jump - will it adopt the Euro after
    all or prefer the protection of Star Wars II
    on offer apparently from US.?
