Munich Re, the world's largest insurer of insurance companies, has
issued a report blaming global warming for the fact that in the year 2000,
there were a record number of natural catastrophes. The insurance
industry escaped large losses only because most of the disasters occurred
outside of big cities. Munich Re predicted that climate change would
cause an increase in the number of natural catastrophes (Tony Major,
"Climate Threatens More Disasters," _Financial Times,_ 13 March 2001,
p. 16).
The insurance industry in the United States does not seem to share
the concerns about global warming expressed by their counterparts in
Europe.
